Clinical EMS Bursaries
Experience the world of pig focussed veterinary practice.
The Pig Veterinary Society (PVS) is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of pig veterinary surgeons. To support motivated students, we offer Clinical EMS Bursaries to help cover the costs of seeing practice.
Overview
Purpose: To support students undertaking pig-specific Extra-Mural Studies (EMS) and to open minds to future career opportunities in the pig sector. Availability: Up to 4 bursaries are available each calendar year (1 January – 31 December). Allocation: Awards are granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
What We Offer
Successful applicants can claim financial support for travel and subsistence costs.
Daily Rate: Up to £50 per day. Maximum Award: Up to £500 per applicant.
How the Funding Works: This is a "top-up" fund. The PVS daily rate is calculated as £50 minus any financial contribution provided by your Host Practice. (e.g., If a practice provides £20/day for accommodation, PVS provides £30/day. If the practice provides nothing, PVS provides the full £50/day.)
Eligibility
You must be a current veterinary student studying for a degree registrable with the RCVS. The placement must be with a dedicated pig team at a UK veterinary establishment (including APHA or other Clinical EMS-eligible placements with pig focus). You must submit your application before the placement begins. You must be a student member of PVS at the time your claim form is received. Student membership costs just £10/yr.
How to Apply (Step-by-Step)
Arrange your EMS placement with a pig-focussed veterinary practice or relevant organization (e.g. APHA). Download the Application Form below. Complete your section (Objectives). Ask your Host Practice to sign their section (confirming dates and any financial support). Email the form to the PVS Student Liaison Officer (details below). Note: Applications are approved by the PVS Education Subgroup and Treasurer. Enjoy your time in practice! Take photos (although always ask your supervisor before doing this) and keep notes on what you learn. After finishing your placement, download the Claim Form below. You must submit: The completed claim form with bank details. A 200-word blog post about your experience (suitable for this website). An optional photo of you in action. Check you have current PVS student membership at the time of your claim.
Information for Host Practices
Is your practice / establishment interested in hosting students? We want to make this easy for you.
We only ask that you sign the student's application form to confirm dates and declare any support you are already providing (e.g., accommodation). PVS picks up the financial shortfall to ensure the student is supported up to £50/day. Download the Host Guidelines below for full details.
